Policy announcement ‘may not be welcomed by employers’

Grandparents will be able to take paid time off work for childcare under government plans to extend the existing shared parental leave.

Parents and grandparents will be able to divide the statutory shared parental pay between them, which is £139.58 a week or 90 per cent of average weekly earnings.
Chancellor George Osborne made the announcement as the Conservative Party conference began in Manchester this week.
Statutory sick pay and statutory maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental pay will not increase in April 2016.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) remains at £88.45 per week.
Since the Equal Pay Act 1970 there has been continuing inequality in terms of pay between men and women – is this a problem that your company still has?

Since the Equal Pay Act 1970 largely superseded by the Equality Act 2010 there has been a requirement to pay men and women equally when doing the same jobs or work of an equal value. The Office for National Statistics’ recent report suggest the pay gap stands at 19.2% meaning women earn around 80p for every £1 earned by a man.
When I say this, I don’t mean have you had your five-a-day or gone for a 3 mile run before starting work each morning, I of course refer to the new ‘Fit For Work Scheme’ aimed to help Employers and Employees deal with long-term sickness absence.
Drug driving regulations are now in force for details see below Drink driving – limits reminder.

We're all aware of the drink-driving limits in the UK, but are you as clued up on the new drug-driving limits?
Police can already prosecute motorists caught driving under the influence of drugs, including medicinal drugs. But the new rules came into force on 2nd March 2015 and introduced specified limits for 16 drugs, similar to what we have with alcohol.
The term 'zero hours' is not defined in legislation, but is generally understood to be an employment contract between an employer and a worker, which means the employer is not obliged to provide the worker with any minimum working hours, and the worker is not obliged to accept any of the hours offered.

It is important that both the employer and worker are aware of the fact that a zero hours contract can make their relationship different to other employment contract arrangements.
